Synopsis:

Every lawyer in practice for more than a few months has at one time or another wanted to "terminate" a difficult client. On the other hand, many of the best attorney-client representations are entered into for specific services and end when that work has been completed. The key to successful termination of attorney-client relationships is to know how and when to make a graceful exit.

This lesson will cover the following issues and offer practice tips to guide lawyers in planning for and concluding attorney-client relationships and specific matters in ongoing relationships:

Course Covers:

  • Ethical considerations in ending client relationships
  • Events which trigger termination of relationships
  • Withdrawing from matters in litigation
  • Substitutions of Attorneys
  • Motions to Withdraw
  • Withdrawing from matters not in litigation
  • Termination letters
  • Return of client papers and property
  • Return of client funds
  • Collection of unpaid fees and costs
